A common type of air conditioning filters used today is the guideline fiberglass air filter and can also be called a furnace filter. These filters come in one or two inch thickness. Millions of homeowners use these types of filters due to the affordability. Although, when these are used in place of the right filter, people will need to have their cooling coil pulled out and cleaned every 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years.
One of the worst air filters you can install is the washable aluminum mesh filter. Dirt and dust slide off the mesh surface which makes it even inefficient than the standard fiberglass filter. When using this type of filter, you would have to pull you cooling coil pulled and cleaned every year. The thought behind this is that people believe that this is not a disposable filter and it would save them money. When in actuality, it is more costly to run this style.
Another style of filter is a polyester filter. The thickness of these filters is one to two inches. Though the filter is a better filter than fiberglass filters, it is still inefficient. You will only have to have your coil changed about every five years. These filters are not much more than a fiberglass filter, but is a lot more efficient than a fiberglass filter.
One common style that you find in most all homes today is a polyester filter. The thickness of these filters is one, two, and even four inches. It’s because of how dense this filter is why it catches smaller dust particles. The effectiveness of the different sizes is about the same, the reason for the different thicknesses is the ability to hold more dirt and you wont have to change as often. With the thicker one, it is slightly better because it allows more of the air to pass across a little slower is why it is more efficient. Polyester filters are more restrictive, so you need to be careful as you can cause freeze up problems or sweating problems in your system.
The HEPA filter is the next generation pleated filter. The thickness of this filter is 4 to 5 inches. These filters are superior than most and have received higher ratings than the filters previously mentioned. These cartridge type filters generally need to be changed every 6 to 12 months. These filters will usually need to be put in by a technician because they do not go into a standard opening.
A large misconception is a washable Electro-Static filter. This filter is said to collect dirt and dust by creating a static charge as air moves through a series of mesh material. A great concept, but when there is any humidity in the household, the static charge is no more.
There are also electronic filters on the market and the thickness of them is usually 5 inches with an electrical current throughout it. This filter emits a charged ion field to a collector cell that has a reverse charge. This technology is not new, just reinvented. This filter is one of the most effective due to it being able to catch the smallest of dirt and dust particles. The 2 problems this filter has is that it needs to be cleaned about once a month and it is fragile.
A finer filtration system will gather just about all the particles that travel through it down to the tiniest level. Just remember that the greatest air conditioning filters can not get all dirt and dust particles because some particles fall throughout your home.
Are you aware you should change your frequently? Nor replacing creates unhealthy air. Make sure your family is safe. Get filters right now and breathe free!
